Thomas Freeth [fh.4.6.1.2.10.5]

Thomas Freeth was the fifth child of John Freeth & Sarah Ann Felton born October 16th, 1871 & christened March 6th, 1873 at Holy Trinity,  West Bromwich, Staffs.

In 1881 Thomas (Tom in census) & his 5 sisters & 4 brothers & parents were living at 15 Watton St, West Bromwich.

By 1891 the family had moved to 26 Watton St & Thomas was now an engine fitter.

Thomas married Ann Elizabeth Stokes in July-September 1893 at West Bromwich register office. Ann was born January 1874 at West Bromwich, the daughter of Hannah & John Stokes, a manager.

In 1901 Thomas & Ann were living at 54 York Rd, Short Heath, Erdington, Warks. Thomas was described as a foreman gas store fitter. They had 2 sons – Bertie (6) & Thomas (11 months).

By 1911 Thomas & Ann (known as Annie) had moved to 150 Gravelly Lane, Erdington & Thomas’ occupation was unchanged.  They now had 3 children – Bertie, a machine hand engineer, Thomas, a scholar & Harold (6).

On April 17th, 1913 Thomas & son Bertie sailed for Sydney, Australia & returned on August 30th, 1913.  Thomas gave his occupation as a fitter & Bertie as a turner.

Son Bertie married Valerie Eugenie Hilda Carroll in 1919 in Wolverhampton.  The 1939 register shows widowed Valerie, Bertie having died in 1937, living in Gypsy Lane, Birmingham with her daughter Jean Carol.  Valerie was working as a credit collector drapery & Jean Carol was a junior book keeper.  Valerie married again in 1947, her second husband was Alfred Johnson.

Son Thomas married Doris Lilian Clews in 1924 & in 1939 they were living at Park Terrace, Keighley, Yorks with their family & Thomas was a district manager of an Assurance Office.

Son Harold married Gwendoline Beryl Crowther in 1931 & in 1939 they were living in Queens Wood, Birmingham where Harold was an Insurance Asst Superintendent. 

The 1939 census shows Thomas, now an egg dealer, manager, & Ann living at 30 Reservoir Rd, Birmingham.  With them was son Leonard Freeth, who was also an egg dealer manager & also an air raid warden.

It is thought that Thomas & Ann along with son Leonard all moved to Yorkshire, where they died. There is a death for Ann E Freeth, aged 76, in Bradford in Jan-March 1951 & a death for Thomas Freeth, aged 80, in Worth Valley, Yorks in Oct-December 1951.

fh.4.6.1.2.10.5.4  Leonard Freeth born March 13th, 1912 at Erdington, Warks; died May 1998 at Bradford, W. Yorks
